That said, with the amount of addons and tweaks I’m running, a PMDG aircraft can still offer a fairly serious challenge. Managing Conflict – 8 Tips For Dealing With Angry People

Tip 1.
If someone is angry, let them sound off and calm down before you try to deal with the situation. Unless they get really abusive or threaten you, it’s best to let them get it off their chest. Once they’ve run out of steam, it’s much easier to handle things. Don’t try to interrupt them and certainly don’t say, “I think you should calm down” as this is like throwing petrol on a smoldering fire.

Tip 2.
In the face of anger, your ”fight or flight” responses will kick in. In other words, you’ll feel the urge either to become aggressive yourself or to run away. Try not to shout back or to burst into tears. Stay calm, count to 10 (or 20) take deep breaths and stay in control.

Tip 3.
Maintain neutral but assertive body language. What does that mean? Don’t avoid eye contact and look down at the floor and don’t shrink physically. But don’t take an aggressive stance either, just sit or stand up straight, keep eye contact and try to look calm and attentive.

Tip 4.
Listen carefully and try to really understand what’s causing the problem. As they calm down and you can have more of a dialogue with them, start to ask questions to get specifics about what’s wrong. Show them you’re interested in getting to the root of the matter, not avoiding it.

Tip 5.
Acknowledge their right to be angry if they have a point. For example, if you’ve made a mistake or failed to complete something by a deadline, own up to it and don’t make excuses. If they’ve been left in a difficult position, tell them you can see why they’re annoyed or frustrated and that you’re eager to help them put things right. Don’t say, “I understand how you feel” because people often react to that by saying “I don’t think you do”. Instead, say something like “I can see why this is frustrating for you.”

Tip 6.
If something has gone wrong, make suggestions about how to fix it. Don’t get bogged down in how it went wrong, be positive about how you’re going to make it better. Show that you’re taking them seriously and say “This is what I’m going to do to deal with this.” Tell them exactly what you’re going to do and when – and make sure you do it. If you feel they’re wrong, that they’re making unfair accusations or blaming you for something which wasn’t your fault, state your case calmly once they’ve settled down and, again, try to come up with a plan to deal with the situation which will make them feel better.

Tip 7.
Don’t take it personally (unless it is, of course). Usually, if someone gets annoyed, it’s not personal, it’s because something has gone wrong and they’re in a difficult position. That may or may not be your fault. In fact, it may be nothing at all to do with you. They may just be in a bad mood about something else. Something goes wrong for someone and the next person they see gets the full brunt of their anger. If you happen to be the unlucky recipient, it’s not your fault but you still have to handle it. Don’t take it as a personal attack. Deal with the situation, not the person.

Tip 8.
If the person is a client or customer, remember that the way you deal with a mistake can lead to someone becoming much more committed to you. We’ve all had problems with suppliers or service providers and the way they’ve handled the problems has determined whether we stayed with them or not. Where someone takes your complaint seriously and deals with it quickly and courteously, you’re probably even more likely to stay with them than if the problem hadn’t arisen in the first place.

Stress Management

Stress Management

*Dr.P.Shanmukha Rao  **Dr.N.V.S.Suryanarayana

High level stress affects the individual directly and through them, their families and organizations are also affected.  Therefore, efforts should be made to overcome the negative consequences of high stress.  Diagram presents the situation in which individuals need support to overcome stress.

Individual Coping Strategies:

Coping strategies may be adopted by individuals without reference to the organization.  Individual coping strategies tend to be more reactive in nature.  That is, they tend to be ways of coping with stress that has already occurred.  Some individual strategies, such as physical exercises, can be both reactive and proactive, but most are geared towards helping the person who is already suffering from stress.  Following are the major individual coping strategies.

Physical Exercise:  Physical exercises of different types such as, walking, jogging, swimming, playing etc, are good methods of overcoming stress.  Physical exercise helps people to better cope with stress generally as a side effect, such as relaxation, enhanced self-esteem, and simply getting one’s mind off work for a while.

Job Enrichment:  Through more rational designing of jobs, jobs can be enriched.  Improving content factors such as responsibility, recognition, opportunity for achievement and advancement, or improving core job characteristics such as skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback may lead to motivation, feeling sence of responsibility, and utilizing maximum capability at the work.  Such a phenomenon helps in reducing stress.

Organisational Role Clarity:  People experience stress when they are not clear about what they are expected to do in the organization.  This may happen because either there is ambiguity in the role or there is role conflict.  Such a situation can be overcome by defining role more clearly.  Role analysis technique helps both managers and employees to analyse what the job entails and what the expectations are.

Career Planning and Counseling:  Career planning and counseling helps the employees to obtain professional advice regarding career paths that would help them to achieve personal goals.  It also make them aware of what additional qualifications, training, and skills they should acquire for career advancement.  A variety of career counseling programmes can be adopted:

(i)   devices designed to aid the individuals in self-assessment and increased self-understanding;

(ii) devices designed to communicate opportunities available to individuals;

(iii) career counseling through interviews by managers, counseling professionals and personnel and educational specialists;

(iv) workshops and educational activities designed to assist the individuals in goal setting and establishing action plan for change;

(v) educational and experimental programmes to prepare individual with skills and knowledge for new activities and new career;

(vi) programmes for enhancing the individuals’ opportunities to make job and career changes.  Various career planning and counseling programmes for individuals go a long way in providing them satisfaction and reducing the stress.

Stress Control Workshops and Employee Assistance Programmes:

The organization can hold periodical workshops for control and reduction of stress.  Such workshops may help individuals to learn the dynamics of stress and methods of overcoming their ill effects.  Similarly, the organization can make arrangement for assisting individuals in overcoming their personal and family problems.  This arrangement may include managing personal finance, dealing with family problems, dealing with health problems, and dealing with other kind of personal and family stresses.

Stress management based on Indian philosophy:

Indian philosophy approach is catching the attention of Western industrially-developed countries to cope with stress.  Meditation and Yoga are being practiced by more and more countries.
Satish Chandra Pandey has developed a model for stress management based on Indian Philosophy consisting of Upanishads, Vedanta etc.  The model is presented in the following diagram:

Identify organizational goals and needs of people and core areas where development is needed.

Develop a philosophical base by combining different Indian philosophies and values compatible with organizational mission and goals

Create awareness among organizational members about these values for building new organizational culture.

Develop training programmes, stress management programmes, motivational development programmes based on Indian philosophies and values.

Organise follow-up programmes to evaluate stress management outcomes and other OD programmes

Make it an integral organizational philosophy and set new goals for achieving excellence in different areas.

If positive outcomes

Rebuild new philosophical base and make it compatible with organizational goals

Case Study

Jennifer is a 42 year old school teacher, with six years’ experience in the classroom.  She qualified as a mature student, having waited until her third and youngest child was at infant school before enrolling on a one-year postgraduate course of teacher training.  As a physics teacher, she quickly found herself in a senior post in a large comprehensive school, taking responsibility for GCE A-Level work and for much of the fifth form examination work as well.  In the 20 years since she took her physics degree, the subject has advanced considerably, and what little leisure time she has after marking work, preparing lessons and looking after her young family is spent trying to keep up to date.  Husband Keith, a civil engineer, is site manager for a large construction company, and is frequently away from home for sizeable periods of time.  Since starting teaching, Jennifer has noticed that she always seems to be tired.  She sleeps badly, often sitting up into the early hours of the morning (‘the only time when I can get a little peace and quiet’ she claims) over her school work.  She notices that it is harder and harder to relax at the end of the school day, and is concerned by her failure to remember the facts and figures associated with her work and even human details like children’s names.  She worries that she seems to be neglected her family, and snapping habitually at her own children over minor issues.  The vague aches and pains that afflict her most of the time, together with the poor digestion and the breathlessness and palpitations, she puts down vaguely to her ‘time of life’.  She has tried several times to discuss her workload with her head of department and with her head teacher, but they rarely have time to listen, and have told her she should be better organized, plan her lessons more carefully, and attend more refreshers courses during the school holidays to keep herself up to date.  When she’s mentioned her problems to her colleagues, they say they feel exactly the same as she does, and quickly change the subject.  She confesses to being angry with herself for not staying more on top of her job, and guilty for all the things she leaves undone both at school and at home.

Work At Home Time Management – Helpful Expert Tips

Whether you are new at working at home or if you have done it for a while, it is always a good idea to know of some helpful tips for work-at-home time management. Everyone knows no matter where they work that the old saying “time is money” is true and the better you manage your time the more effective you will be, which in turn will lead to more production and more production leads to money. So it is a good idea to know how to get the most out of your day.

It is always a smart idea to make plans for the next day, the day prior. If you set down a plan of attack before the day comes you will already be one step ahead of yourself. The important thing here is also to make sure that you follow your plan from beginning to end.

Another important thing to note is you always need to make sure that you set your priorities from the beginning. Make sure that you organize your tasks in order of their importance and when they need to be done. Make sure to break them down into different categories and place the categories in order of importance as well. It is also important to check off each task as they are completed so that you know where you stand throughout the entire day.

You should also make good use of the time you might not be spending in your home office. Keeping a notepad with you at all times or a voice recorder is always good advice. This way if you come up with some ideas that might work for your job, you can jot them down or note it on your recorder. If you have a cell phone you can also use that as a great way to remind yourself of something that needs to be done by having the phone send you alerts to what needs to be done.

Another good idea is to make sure that you are up at least an hour earlier than the rest of your family so that you have time to get prepared for the day before you need to take care of the morning needs that your family may have.

Always make sure to set up a schedule that allows for you to take regular breaks away from the work that you are doing.
You will be amazed at just what a few minutes away can do for your freshness and ability to function at doing your job.

Learn to balance your work with your home life. People tend to feel they can just work, work, work when they are at home without it affecting them in any way. However; this is not true. Even with working at home you need some time to play. So schedule some me time or family time during the day so that your job does not consume you.

Little details are important as well. Make sure you have a good and speedy Internet connection and not dial up. Make sure that your office area is all centralized in one area so that whenever you need to use the printer, fax or get supplies that they are basically all at your fingertips rather than located elsewhere. All of this saves you time.

Most importantly you must set down a permanent schedule of what your work hours and work days are and when you have down time. This schedule needs to be posted for everyone to see. You should of course explain to your family and friends that you really are not trying to choose work over them but that working at home is no different than if you were working away from home and that everyone needs to respect the hours which you have chosen to do your work.

D-Nice – Call Me D-Nice

Rating: 4

From 1990 Album: “Call Me D-Nice”….. D-Nice’s Myspace: www.myspace.com Get D-Nice’s Music: www.amazon.com D-Nice grew up in the Bronx, hip-hops birthplace, and emerged as a rapper and producer in the late 1980s. The late Scott La Rock of Boogie Down Productions mentored D-Nice as a teenager and offered him a place to develop his talent alongside rap legend KRS-One. He began to expand into production, producing The Stop The Violence Movement’s number 1 single, Self Destruction, and later working with Queen Latifah and Kid Rock on their early albums. Ultimately, D-Nice released two albums with Jive records, including the 1990 hit single Call Me D-Nice, which reached the top of Billboards rap chart. During a musical hiatus in the mid nineties, D-Nice began to delve into the emerging Internet industry. In 2000 he co-founded Boom Digital, a web design firm that worked on sites for Aaliyah, Queen Pen and Reebok, capitalizing on the dot-com boom. Seven months later, he started his own company, United Camps, which has created the web presence of Alicia Keys, Luther Vandross, and Wyclef Jean, and is currently working with Violator Management on several projects. In 2003, after a night of rubbing shoulders with old industry acquaintances at Q-Tips birthday party, D-Nice knew his return to the turntables was imminent. Studying the techniques of Q-Tip, DJ Hot Day, Mark Ronson, DJ Cassidy, and DJ Scratch, I wanted to understand what made those guys special, say D-Nice. As in all of

Time Management vs. Self Management

Are you someone who makes lists of all the things you need to do? At the end of the day when you review your list, are you disappointed because you haven’t accomplished as much as you would have liked. Does this sound familiar to you?

We hear a lot about time management and how we need to organize ourselves and manage our time more effectively. In order to regulate our time, new ways of thinking and being need to be developed. Our attitudes and beliefs need to be identified and at times altered in order to make beneficial changes. We need to develop self management strategies. When we manage ourselves better we tend to be less overwhelmed, more productive and happier.

There are various models for time management. One is making daily and/or weekly lists, then prioritizing which items are the most important and tending to those first. Of course the challenge is that is if you don’t like some of the tasks, you probably tend to avoid doing them. (I know this strategy intimately.) It also does not account for all of the complications which arise nowadays on our job. Emails, voice mails urgent requests which must be dealt with immediately, or conference calls; all of the modern technology which has made our lives easier and more complicated at the same time. We are generally expected to do more in less time and with less support.

Steven Covey in his book, First Things First breaks tasks down into 4 quadrants:

* Urgent and Important,
* Not Urgent and Important
* Urgent and Not Important
* Not Urgent and Not Important

There is a great deal of value in this model and certainly gets one thinking about how to define the many things one has to do.
The difficulty is that important projects can become urgent if one has procrastinated and that isn’t necessarily a helpful way to operate. It would also be relevant to identify what is important to you and spend time doing that as well, because it might never become urgent. For example, your family may be very important to you, but you frequently miss your child’s school or sporting events. Or your partner wants to spend more time with you, but somehow you don’t make it happen. It’s important, but not urgent. The other concern is when do unimportant things get tended to.

So how can we get things done in ways which are more productive and less stressful? David Allen, author of Getting Things Done, states that it is not about managing time, but rather about managing our actions. What would it be like for you to fully dedicate 100% of your attention to whatever task was present, of your own choosing with no distraction? Allen says it is possible to get things done with minimal effort in both your personal and professional life while staying relaxed. Athletes describe it as being in the “zone”. His strategy is to first get you thinking. What is something you want to accomplish? What outcome do you want to achieve and what is the very next action you need to do in order to move your project forward? Try this exercise and notice if there were any changes in your mood and perspective.

In addition, Allen has identified a five stage method for managing workflow.

These are described as:

* Collect things that command our attention
* Process what they mean and what to do about them
* Organize the results
* Review as options for what we choose to
* Do

This way of looking at things seems reasonable and many of us probably do something which resembles this. However, difficulties arise if there is a breakdown in any of the stages and ultimately it leads to what we choose to do or not do.

Allen’s model for choosing actions in the moment include the following:

Context – Does it require a particular location (office, home) and what tools are required (computer, phone, etc.)

Time Available – When do you have to do something else? If you have a conference call in 15 minutes, then there many things you won’t be able to do.

Energy Available – Evaluate how much energy you have in the moment. Some tasks may require more physical energy, while others need creative energy

Priority – Given your context, time and energy what action will give you the biggest payoff? You are at your office and you have 30 minutes before a meeting and your energy level is low. View this as an opportunity to rely on your intuition to determine what to do next. Perhaps reading your emails or proofreading a report is the most you can manage.

We need to think about our work before we do it. Planning for it, as well as paying attention to what we are thinking and feeling leads to greater productivity with less effort. What better way to then have the time to do more of what we really enjoy!
